Twenty five years ago today, an epic moment in nerdom was born when Mystery Science Theater debuted on KTMA in Minneapolis. The show later aired on Comedy Central and then the Sci-Fi channel until 1999. Taking the ancient art of calling back to the screen to this national level was original creator Joel Hodgson (and later Mike Nelson) along with his robot friends (ROBOT ROLE CALL! CAMBOT! GYPSY! TOM SERVO! CROOOOOW!) Any nerd worth their salt can recite lines and riffs from Manos: The Hands of Fate, The Final Sacrifice, This Island Earth and Teenagers from Space. One of first things Bo and I bonded over was MST3K when we met for the first time over 10 years ago and I introduced it to her. The movie that we loved the most then and still now is the Joe Don Baker classic Mitchell. Lines from this episode are still a part of our daily lexicon. Read all about the show here and if you’re hankering for more, Mike, Kevin and Bill now riff mainstream movies on Rifftrax. If you’ve never seen MST3K, or never seen Mitchell, I highly suggest checking it out right this very second. WE GOT MOVIE SIGN!
